Dean Tyler, a Broadcast Pioneers member, has been in Philadelphia broadcasting for many years. His real name is Tyler Finch (born in 1934 in northern New Jersey) and started in broadcasting at WAMS in Wilmington, Delaware. Tyler's broadcasting career began while attending the University of Delaware where he majored in biology (pre-veterinary medicine). Moving on to Wilmington competitor WILM, he finally joined WIBG Radio in 1960 doing overnights from 1 am to 5:30. He stayed a year and then worked at WJBK in Detroit and WHN in New York City.
He returned to the Quaker City and WIBG in 1965 where he stayed until the end of 1968 as Music Director. From there, he went to WIP Radio in July 1969 as Program Director and in 1976 was transferred to Metromedia's (owner of WIP) sister station in New York City, WNEW. While at WIP, he helped achieve the most significant ratings and profits in the station's history. During his time at WIP, he had on camera duties at WPHL-TV, Channel 17 in Philadelphia.
He then went to KLIF in Dallas as a consultant in October of 1979, returning to Philadelphia in October of 1980. At that time, he joined the staff of WFIL Radio as Program Director.
In 1983, he went to WPEN as Program Director. The next year, he became Operations Manager for both WPEN and WMGK. In October 1988, he was named Vice-President and General Manager of WPEN and WMGK, a post he held until September of 1996. At that time, he became WPEN's Station Manager. He stayed with the station doing morning drive until he retired on December 1, 2000.
Dean has received many industry and other awards, including the Ken Garland Lifetime Achievement Award for his work with the March of Dimes Birth Defect Foundations. On Friday, November 22, 2002, Dean Tyler was inducted into our "Hall of Fame."
Tyler has had considerable sales experience, is active in sports, has two children (Tracy and Dean) and five grandchildren. He resides in Brigantine, New Jersey with his wife Marylou who was an Account Executive at WPEN.
