Matt Silva holding two rescued kittens
February 20, 2011

Here's a "human" interest story that the media missed. Two 8-week-old kittens were found in the Delaware river about ten days ago. One was huddled on a floating log and the other was swimming towards its sibling (probably not by choice). The pair was rescued by Gerry Wilkinson's son-in-law Matt Silva and Matt's brother Peter. They both work for their parents who own a tug boat company.

Gerry and his family are going to adopt the kittens. They are thinking of names for the pair (one male and one female). Leading contenders are Ozzie and Harriet. The gray kitten is male and the tabby is female. Both have long hair.

Other possible names are George & Gracie, Herman and Lily, Lucy and Ricky, Lucy and Desi, and even Carter and Patricia. Have suggestions? E-mail your ideas to: pioneers@broadcastpioneers.com. While there are no prizes, you can help come up with good names.

For those interested in the health of the pair: The female is doing well. The male has pneumonia and is taking antibiotics. His condition has improbed and he is expected to make a full recovery. The pair were litter box trained and familiar with people when found, so they weren't strays. The pier where one of the tug boats is anchored seems to be a dumping ground for animals; Gerry's oldest daughter Maya and her husband Matt have an additional cat and dog that both were rescued from the riverfront area.
