Broadcast Pioneers member and occasional contributor to the newsletter, Frank Stone was recently invited to speak to the journalism class of Wildwood Catholic High School.

As part of his presentation, Frank included an “On the Scene interview with journalism teacher and Administrative Dean, Mrs. Carolyn Miller.

Mrs. Miller has been in education all her life having taught every grade with the exception of first grade. She has taught globally as well as on an Indian reservation. Miller has a degree in education, plus two master’s degrees, one in theology and one in education administration.

For eight years Miller was the author of a very successful column for The Cape May County Herald about fishing in South Jersey. Most recently she authored a non-fiction children’s book titled, “Counting The Fish In the Sea”, with all original photographs, explaining how the fish are counted, spearheaded by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in conjunction with (NEAMAP) Northeast Monitoring and Assessment Program.

The journalism class is an interactive experience for the students. In addition to traditional classroom work each student is responsible for three articles in each edition of the school’s newsletter, “The Crusader Express,” which is also utilized as a development tool with distribution of over 5,000 copies per issue.

Miller said: “my objective and goal is teaching how to write the news and making it newsworthy”. As for the future she said: “I’ve tried retirement three times, I’ll be here for a while”.

An interesting side note, we learned one of the students in the class is already on air with two area radio stations, WCZT and WIBG, reporting local sports on weekends. From what we saw and experienced from these young people, the future of journalism and broadcasting looks bright.
